Following the success of last month’s comedy evening headlined by Paul Tonkinson, organisers at Aston Cricket Club are celebrating not only a night full of laughter, but a significant boost to their ongoing community improvements.
Around 120 people packed into the village hall, creating what organiser Rob Earl described as an ‘intimate, rustic’ setting that came alive once full.
‘The atmosphere was fantastic,’ he said. ‘We’ve had brilliant feedback from people who came along.’
The evening featured a strong line-up of comedians, with compère Karen Bayley keeping the energy high throughout. A standout moment came from sketch duo The All Night Chemist, whose performance had audience members ‘spitting their drinks out’ with laughter. The night was rounded off in style by Tonkinson, whose trademark high-energy delivery proved a hit with the Wrenbury crowd.
Beyond the comedy, the event also offered a chance for the club to engage with supporters. A question-and-answer session reflected on the past year across the club’s teams, with particular pride in the women’s side, who have secured more trophies than their male counterparts.
Financially, the evening was a clear success, raising approximately £1,500. The funds are being directed towards a major winter refurbishment project at the clubhouse, which is now nearing completion. Around £12,000 has been invested in upgrading facilities, including modernised men’s and ladies’ toilets, new showers, and improved disabled and baby-changing provision.
Looking ahead, the club has no plans to slow down. Their next major fundraiser, outdoor music event “Astonbury,” is scheduled for 27th June, while junior cricket sessions will soon return on Friday evenings. The club is also encouraging new players of all ages and abilities to get involved, with a particular invitation extended to women interested in trying cricket.
Plans are already in place for next year’s comedy night, set for 20th March. With Karen Bayley’s extensive contacts in the comedy world, organisers are confident of attracting another big-name headliner.
